Finished off the year with the Irish nationals and having been injured last year and losing in the final it had been something that had been deep on my mind since! I came into the event in good nick and though not having the greatest of starts to the season, I was starting to become more accustomed to some of the changes I’d made to my game and feeling pretty good going into the event.
The road to the semis was pretty straight forward where I met Michael Craig, a young up an coming player with a lot of potential. Admittedly I was dangerously passive against a young hungry player and had to G myself up now and again to keep on top and not to give him to much of a sniff and closed out in 3 but if he keeps going the way he’s going he’ll be one to watch out for!
The final was a repeat of last years final v Derek Ryan and I was delighted to have the chance to play him again. I was so focused for this match and all was going to plan until I was 5/1 up in the 3rd, having won the 1st two 11/2 11/2, I thought to meself match was over and I lost concentration gave a few easy points away and before long we were into cagey territory and a 4th set. Thankfully though I managed to screw my noodle back on and take the 4th 11/3 and with it I felt an enormous amount of relief and delight to become national champion for a second time and had finally put last years match behind me…
Xmas, New Years and a break followed, spending quality time with family friends and the misses and is always a good time to reflect on the year past and set goals for the year ahead and though I may not be as high as I’d like I feel pretty optimistic for what 2014 has install so we’ll see what happens!
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank my sponsors for their continued support : Head, Gillen Markets, Irish Squash & Adidas.
